It gives us great pleasure
to issue their astonishing debut album “Music From The Big Pink” (No.30 US
’68). This debut album emerged following a lengthy period of playing as
Bob Dylan’s backing band (they were responsible for the much bootlegged
“The Basement Tapes”), following which Robbie Robertson, Richard Manuel,
Rick Danko, Garth Hudson and Levon Helm decided to go it alone as the
Band. For a debut album “Music From The Big Pink” is an astonishingly
accomplished piece of work. The first single released from the album -
“The Weight” (No.21 UK, No.63 US ’68) became a hit on both sides of the
Atlantic and was backed with Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released” to
effectively make it a great double-sider. Also on the album is a fantastic
version of Dylan and Rick Danko’s “This Wheel’s On Fire”. Also, for you
collectors out there, please remember that the sleeve was originally
painted by Bob Dylan, so here is once again an opportunity to get a lovely
12” square piece of legendary Bob Dylan artwork as well as a fantastic
slab of 180 gram vinyl on a guaranteed all-time rock classic!

Continuing our tradition of
re-releasing the best albums from the Beach Boys it seems only fitting
that our 300th release should be the third album in the trilogy of
brilliant Beach Boys albums which started with “Pet Sounds” (SVLP149),
went on to “Smiley Smile” (SVLP219) and now finishes with the excellent
“Wild Honey” (No.7 UK, No.24 US ’68). This album once again shows off
Brian Wilson’s extraordinary talent for song writing and production via
both the severely under-rated “Wild Honey” (No.29 UK, No.31 US ’67) and
the brilliant “Darling” (No.19 US ’67, No.11 UK ’68). Aside from all the
other gems on this album, it also features the original version of “Here
Come The Night” which they later re-recorded and released as their
ill-judged venture into the world of disco music. Even though “Wild Honey”
has often been written off as a ‘back to basics’ album and was recorded in
Brian Wilson’s living room, it is still an excellent yardstick of the
band’s history in one of their most turbulent periods. Plus, it’s still
the Beach Boys AND on 180 gram vinyl which makes it a ‘must-have’ purchase
anyway!!

As a result of the immense
popularity of our first Beach Boys release - "Pet Sounds" (SVLP149), we
thought it was only fair to release their follow-up to such a classic -
we're talking the legendary "Smiley Smile". Now let's be honest here -
even attempting to follow up the brilliance of "Pet Sounds" would be a
tough mission for anyone, leave alone the Beach Boy!. Add into the
equation the astounding array of mind-bending drugs which were around at
the time and the descent into weirdness which affected the Beach Boys
resident genius Brian Wilson and we have all the ingredients of an A.1.
disaster. Well, make no mistake about it, there is little doubt that the
Beach Boys lost their former Surfing audience and exchanged 'em for a new
generation of stoners. Containing the magnificent "Good Vibrations" (No.1
UK, No.1 US '66) and the audacious "Heroes and Villains" (No.9 UK, No.12
US '67), "Smiley Smile" is definitely an album of some very weird and
wonderful times. Needless to say, it sounds absolutely superb on beautiful
180 gram vinyl - as it was meant to be heard.

We welcome the guitarist
extroadinaire Jeff Beck with his superlative first album under his own
name only, so welcome to the brilliant “Blow By Blow” (No.4 U.S. ’75).
This album came two years after Jeff’s last album with his previous group
Beck, Bogart & Appice and it highlights the more freeform improvised Jazz
direction which Jeff was aiming for at the time. Produced by the Beatles
producer George Martin with Max Middleton on keyboards, Phil Chenn on bass
and Richard Bailey on drums and percussion, “Blow By Blow” is a
masterpiece of brilliant free-form jazz with Jeff playing at the very peak
of his powers. Definitely not an album for lovers of the more rock-based
Jeff Beck era, however any guitar or music fan cannot fail to be moved by
the sheer quality of musicianship utilised on this album. Also lovers of
jazz rock, jazz funk or fusion will not be disappointed. Tracks include
“She’s A Woman”, “AIR Blower”, “Scatterbrain”, “Cause We’ve Ended As
Lovers”, “Theolonius”, “Freeway Jam” and the interestingly titled
“Constipated Duck” among others. Available for the first time ever on 180
gram vinyl. Another million-selling monster finally available again. |

Propelled by Booker
T. Jones' smoky organ and the funky guitar bursts of Steve Cropper,
"Green Onions"—the first chart-topper by Booker T. & The MG's—slithered
across the 1962 airwaves, followed immediately by an album every bit as
savory. Hot on the heels of that first MG's smash, here's a second
helping, "Mo' Onions," as well as the exquisite pop delights of
"Stranger On The Shore" and the unsurpassed after-hours smolder of
"Behave Yourself." The original Green Onions LP by the peerless
Booker T. & The MG's: exact reproduction available now from SUNDAZED on

We
welcome the legendary Box Tops featuring the mighty gravel voiced tonsils
of Alex Chilton. Here, for the first time on vinyl is “Soul Deep – The
Best Of The Box Tops” (released in 1999). Naturally we’re talking all the
major hits here including all-time classic “The Letter” (No.5 UK, No.1 US
’67), “Neon Rainbow” (No.24 US ’67), the brilliant “Cry Like A Baby”
(No.15 UK, No.2 US ’68), “Choo Choo Train” (No.26 US ’68), the haunting “I
Met Her In Church” (No.37 US) and “Soul Deep” (No.22 UK, No.18 US ’69)
among many others. There is veritable smorgasbord of talent on this album
including such legendary names as producers and writers Dan Penn, Tommy
Cogbill and Chips Moman. All the recordings have that southern distinctive
flavour of American Sound Studios aided and abetted by such legendary
players as Reggie Young, Bobby Wood and Tommy Cogbill among others.
Naturally the standard of the songs is absolutely superlative throughout
with the majority of the output by Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, Wayne
Carson Thompson and Alex Chiltern himself. This is an album which truly
has to be heard on 180 gram vinyl to wrench the soul from the grooves! A
gem!

With their
cosmopolitan mix of hard funk, big band jazz, Latin salsa and delicate
Caribdean upbeats, Brass. Construction had a profound effect on the music
of the 1970's. Coupling dance floor cool with commercial savvy, "BC"
masterminded a brand of sophisticated pop that, mixed with mainstream jazz
and African folk, extended the historical concerns of black popular misic
into the rhythmic world of urban America. Building on the contemporary pop
of the Watts Band, Ohio Players, Kool & The Gang and their antecedents in
Sly Stone, James Brown, George Clinton, Sun Ra and Jimi Hendrix, BC cut a
swath through the netherwold of funk and formulated a blueprint for the
disco era.

To
compliment our superb James Brown Soul Classics Vols 1 & 2, we decided to
continue passing the funk flavour around by re-issuing two superb
compilations of James Brown affiliated productions which were issued in
the mid 80’s and have been long since deleted but heavily in demand ever
since! Welcome to James Brown’s Funky People Vol 1. This brilliant series
highlights the best of the various musicians and artists who worked with
Mr Superbad himself. Artists like the awe-inspiring JB’s, whose “Gimme
Some More” (No.11 RnB, No.67 Pop US), “Pass The Peas” (No.29 RnB, No.95
Pop US), “Givin’ Up Food For Funk”, “Hot Pants Road” and “Damn Right, I Am
Somebody” pretty much laid the boilerplate for funk in the early 70’s.
Likewise the mighty Maceo and the Macs whose “Parrty” (No.24 RnB, No.71
Pop US) similarly laid down the funk gauntlet. Add to these the brilliant
“Think (About It)” (No.9 RnB, No.66 Pop US), the stomping “Rock Me Again &
Again & Again & Again & Again” (No.53 RnB US) and the gospelly “Take Me
Just As I Am” by the fiery Lyn Collins and you have all the ingredients
for a goddamn funk manifesto! On a 180 gram glorious double!

So here is James Brown’s Funky People Vol 2 and we’re
talkin’ another feast of grade A funk right here. Kicking off with Bobby
Byrd’s much sampled “I Know You Got Soul” (No.30 RnB US) and Hank
Ballad’s much in-demand “From The Love Side” (No.43 RnB US), this album
kicks ass from the word go! Add to the pot Maceo & The Mac’s legendary
“Soul Power ‘74” (No.20 RnB US) with a dash of Fred Wesley & The JB’s
“You Can Have Watergate But Gimme Some Bucks And I’ll Be Straight” plus
a pinch of Bobby Byrd’s “Hot Pants – I’m Coming, I’m Coming” (No.34 RnB,
No.85 Pop US) and the funkpot will definitely keep boiling! Plenty of
spice from the girls too with Lyn Collins frenetic “Do Your Thing” and
“Put It On The Line” plus Myra Barnes two classics “Super Good” and “The
Message From The Soul Sisters” and we have another dish of cordon-bleu
sizzling Funk n’ Soul. Basically if you’re gonna buy the James Brown
Soul Classics then you pretty much need both the Funky People albums
too!

Date
of Birth: May 3, 1933. James Brown was born in Barnwell, South Carolina.
He was raised in poverty in Augusta, Georgia, 40 miles away. In 1953 James
Brown joins the Gospel Starlighters, a vocal quartet led by Bobby Byrd,
after completing a four-year stint in prison for robbery. The group will
change its focus from gospel to R&B and its name to the Famous Flames, as
Brown becomes the focal point of the act. In November 1, 1955 The Famous
Flames record "Please Please Please" at the studio of WIBB in Macon,
Georgia. October 1, 1958: James Brown's first #1 hit, "Try Me," is
released. It is the best-selling R&B single of 1958—and the first of 17
chart-topping R&B singles by Brown over the next two decades. February 1,
1965: James Brown records "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," a revolutionary
single that ushers in a whole new era of soul music. Released that summer,
it tops the R&B chart for eight weeks and even cracks the pop Top Ten.

Mystery White Boy is a
mesmerizing live collection of songs from Buckley's 1994 -1996 tours,
and it's definitely a valuable piece of history that has stood the test
of time. It draws you deep in thought and reminds you that 'music' has
lost an immensely talented singer-songwriter. This album is proof that
Jeff Buckley's concerts were notoriously unpredictable and thrilling.
His true passion and intensity are captured so vividly through tracks
like "Dream Brothers," "What Will You Say," and a heavy "Last Goodbye."
Buckley even has the ability to still hypnotize you with the slower
downbeat tracks, ("Lilac Wine") transcending time and place. Originally
released in 2000, it featured on the Billboard 200 Chart, and was one of
the big-selling albums (No.12) noted on the Top Internet Albums Chart.
Mystery White Boy is one of the best live albums rock has produced, and
a core part of Jeff Buckley's ever-growing legacy. For those not
fortunate enough to have experienced Jeff Buckley in performance, this
is an absolute must have!

James Brown got his start
when Bobby Byrd invited him to join the group that would become the Famous
Flames in late 1952. In time Byrd would become Brown's keyboardist,
vocalist, factotum, and musical director, serving with him through several
incarnations of the Flames and the JBs. The two finally broke up their
partnership in 1973. Byrd released over 40 singles under his own name
between 1963 and 1976, many of them produced by Brown.

Well, “Sweetheart Of The
Rodeo” (No.77 US ’68) was the sixth album in the Byrds career, but it fell
a long way short of their previous albums in chart terms. But,
nonetheless, here it is, another defining moment in Rock n’ Roll history
but, alas, not one which made a great deal of impact at the time.
“Sweetheart Of The Rodeo” was a bold move for such an established band at
the time, mainly ‘cos the band did a metamorphosis from a folky/rocky type
band into an out n’ out Country and Western type band with rock
influences! Such a 180 degree turn was nothing short of commercial suicide
after five solid hit albums in a row. So the album basically stiffed upon
it’s release. Which made it extremely rare. Also “Sweetheart” was the
album which introduced Gram Parsons to the band following David Crosby’s
departure, which is another great reason for buying this platter,
especially as it is now available as a 160 gram package at long last.
