Following our previous
release of Nas’s superlative debut album “Illmatic” (SVLP377), we now
release his gem of a follow-up, the two times platinum “It Was Written”.
Featuring contributions from Mobb Deep, Lauren Hill, AZ, Foxy Brown and
even Dr Dre on vocals and backed by Delight on keyboards and Kid Capri on
scratching, “It Was Written” is also graced with top level productions
from Dr Dre (“Nas Is Coming”), the Trackmasters (“The Message”, “Street
Dreams”, “Watch Dem Niggas” and “Affirmitive Action” amongst others) and
DJ Premier (“I Gave You Power”). “It Was Written” proved to be a fitting
follow-up to his previous classic, featuring two major hit singles with
“If I Ruled The World” (No.12 UK ’96), ”Street Dreams” (No.12 UK ’97)
amongst a whole heap of other KILLER album cuts. Naturally, we’ve done the
album as our usual 2 slabs of prime quality 180 gram vinyl to give the
bass response that extra kick! Another worthy addition to our
ever-expanding list of Rap classics!

Nickelback released their
debut album "Curb" on their own tiny independent label which managed to
sell 10,000 units in their native Canada. This then lead to hot Rock
independent label Roadrunner snapping them and releasing their debut for
the label "The State" in March 2000. The result was immediate acceptance
from Canada's rock cognoscenti leading to two killer tracks "Breathe" and
"Leader Of Men" both going Top 10 on the mainstream Rock Chart and a third
track "Old Enough" hitting the top 20 on the same chart. "The State" laid
down Nickelback's claim for Rock superstardom by winning two awards -
'Best New Artist' and 'Best Indy Modern Rock Album of 2000'. Following the
success of "Silver Side Up", "The State" started moving back up the charts
and has now gone 'gold'. Oh yeah, did we forget to tell you, this is the
world vinyl exclusive release of "The State" on super heavy vinyl!

Welcome
to the biggest selling album of 2002 - "Silver Side Up" by Nickelback!
Without a doubt the winner of the "Golden Throat of the Year" award must
undoubtably go to Nickelback's Chad Kroeger whose 'gargling with razor
blades' type vocals seem to be on the radio around the clock via radio's
most played song of the last year, the rock anthem and U.S. No.1 "How You
Remind Me". This is truly one of the greatest rock classics of all time
and stands up there proudly with the rest of the Simply Vinyl catalogue.
The ONLY way to hear "How You Remind Me" is via deep cut grooves and
heavyweight vinyl believe us. However, "Silver Side Up" is far from a one
song classic and is packed with the kind of songs that make 15 million
people rush out to buy the album. The current single "Too Bad" is another
great example along with driving rock killers like "Never Again", "Just
For", "Hollywood" and "Money Bought", as well as the slow burners like
"Hangnail","Good Times Gone" and "Just For" amongst others. This is the
WORLD VINYL EXCLUSIVE for "Silver Side Up" and the package includes a full
colour inner bag with photos, credits and those all-important lyrics to
the best collection of rock songs all year.

Released in
September 1991 on Geffen, ‘Nevermind’, Nirvana's second album,
was their major label debut. After selling in excess of 10
million copies in the US alone, the Diamond certified album
placed Seattle grunge firmly on the rock map. Featuring the
singles 'Come As You Are', 'Lithium' and 'In Bloom', it was lead
track 'Smells Like Team Spirit' and its accompanying video,
heavily rotated on MTV, that pushed the genre-defining album
into the Top Ten around the globe. According to the New York
Times, it was "The culmination of 10 years of post-punk, and a
reinvention of the style for a new generation… Smart, sarcastic
rock, noisy and catchy and unabashedly confused, that zoomed
from a collegiate cult following into the Top 10 without a hint
of appeasement."

Having
successfully brought grunge to the mainstream with 1991’s
airwave dominating Nevermind, and its lead anthem, ‘Smells Like
Teen Spirit’, Nirvana felt they needed to claw back some much
needed punk rock credibility for 1993’s In Utero. Electing to
hire Big Black’s Steve Albini to record their third (and last)
studio recording, the choice was no doubt influenced by Albini’s
impeccable credentials, having produced Kurt Cobain favourites
The Breeders and The Pixies, as well as fronting the influential
and confrontational Big Black during the 1980s. With a much more
aggressive sound than its distinctly poppier predecessor,
according to Q magazine, its ³songs confirm Cobain's genius with
a tune… If this is how Cobain is going to develop, the future is
lighthouse-bright’. Sadly, this was not to be the case.

Certain
concerts create a legend as soon as the
final note ceases to ring. Nirvana's
headlining appearance at the 1992 {Reading
Festival is one of these shows, a concert
that arrived at precisely the right moment
and stands as testament to a band at the
peak of its powers...and right before things
started to turn sour within the Nirvana
camp. Despite the happy news of the birth of
Frances Bean Cobain a mere 12 days before
this August 30 festival, rumors swirled
around Nirvana right up until the band hit
the stage. Kurt Cobain took full advantage
of these scurrilous stories, making his
entrance in a hospital gown and wheelchair
pushed by journalist Everett True. Cobain
feebly reached for the microphone to croak
out the opening lines of "The Rose," only to
collapse onto the stage, milking the drama
for a moment before leading Krist Novoselic
and Dave Grohl through a ferocious "Breed."
This impish sense of humor has been obscured
over the years, lost under the weight of the
band's tragic legacy, along with the fact
that Nirvana could actually be fun as well
as furious. Live at Reading brings all this
roaring back. This is Nirvana's purest blast
of rock & roll: there's a boundless,
invigorating energy here and, just as
importantly, there's a sense of joy to the
performances, a joy that bubbles to the
surface when Kurt laughs during the intro of
"Sliver" but can be heard throughout the
show, as the band rushes in tandem, pushing
the tempos on "Aneurysm" and "Territorial
Pissings," ebbing and flowing as one. Hints
of this could be heard on the live comp From
the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah, but this is
a complete document of Nirvana in full
flight and one of the greatest live rock &
roll albums ever. Stephen Thomas Erlewine.
