Ramones Johnny, Joey, Dee Dee,
and Marky sound bigger, fuller and more polished then ever. Of course, the
producer was Phil ("Wall'O'Sound") Spector. Interestingly, too, the single
to be released with this LP is the one cur the Ramones didn't compose, Baby,
I Love You, which Spector co-wrote for the Ronnetes back in 1963, In
and case, Phil and the boys prove to be a happy combination of talents.
Despite his vaunted polish, Spector hasn't mixed away the underlying rawness
and driving delivery that made the group the first New Wavers to attract
national attention. The Ramones, who come from Queens, have perfected a
crazily eclectic accent. They say "banahna" as though they're from Britain
and "Rock'n'Roll like Midwesterners. What with their juvenile lyrics and
cult movie hit, Rock'n'Roll High School (that song is included on
this LP), the Ramones seem sure to crack the Top 40 this time. |

This, as everyone should
already know, is a brilliant album. “Transformer” (No.13 UK, No.29 US ’72)
was Lou Reed’s second solo album since leaving the Velvet Underground but
it was his first real taste of success spawning classics by the load with
“Walk On The Wild Side” (No.10 UK, No.16 US ’72), “Perfect Day”, “Vicious”
and “Satellite Of Love”. The album not only is choc full of great songs
but was also beautifully produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson.
Obviously “Transformer” should be in everyone’s record collection and now
it can be! So what else d’ya need to know? If you don’t own this already
you should immediately rush out and buy it, OK? |

Another piece of history
revisited by your friendly vinyl vendors! One of the brilliant things
about this gig is that it gives us the opportunity to revisit and
re-evaluate a lot of early albums by today's giant superstars. So, welcome
to the first album by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, called surprisingly "Red
Hot Chili Peppers". Now we all know that the band exploded with "Blood
Sugar Sex Magik" which was rather unfortunate for EMI who had persevered
with the band's previous four album releases. Publicity wise they should
have got off to a rocking start by signing to EMI-America in the nude but
unfortunately this didn't translate into record sales on any of their
first four albums, which was unfortunate because each and every one is
rockin'! So, for those of you who have only discovered the Chili's own
unique brand of Acid Funk N' Roll just recently, "Red Hot Chili Peppers"
is a monster of an album. Any disbelievers only have to hear songs like
the manic "True Men Don't Kill Coyotes" or the funk rap of "Baby Appeal",
"Buckle Down" and "Why Don't You Love Me" to appreciate the true appeal of
the Chilis. If you like your music hot then grab the Chilis on 180 gram
vinyl - you know it makes sense! |

There was a great reception
for the debut album from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, so we decided to
continue the fun and release their second album - the funk-rock classic
"Freaky Styley". As with all the early Chili Peppers albums, "Freaky
Styley" failed to chart - a classic case of a band being way ahead of
their time. Produced by P-Funk Godfather George Clinton, "Freaky Styley"
is a no-holds-barred excursion into heavy funk-rock with Clinton's touch
being a perfect foil for this unique band. In fact the album stands up
much better today then it ever did on first hearing. Right from the very
first track - the motherfunkin' "Jungle Man" through to the percussive and
very funky "Yertle The Turtle", "Freaky Styley" is a great Chili-styled
funk-rock workout and a brilliant indication of what was to come. The
album also includes the only single released from it - the scintillating
"Hollywood (Africa)", which failed to make the charts but has since become
something of a collectable rarity. Make no mistake, "Freaky Styley" is the
Chili's at their funk-rockin' best and, in our opinion is every bit as
good as "Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magik" and "Calafornication". |

Continuing with our Red Hot
Chili Peppers re-issue policy and following on from their debut - "Red Hot
Chili Peppers" and "Freaky Styley". It gives us great pleasure to re-issue
their third album, the uniquely titled "The Uplift Mofo Party Plan". This
was essentially the last album which would feature the original line-up of
Anthony Kiedis, Hillel Slovak, Michael `Flea' Balzary and Jack Irons. The
unfortunate death of Slovak from a drug overdose and the departure of
Irons for pastures new would bring in future members John Frusciante and
Chad Smith for their album "Mother's Milk". But what of "The Uplift Mofo
Party Plan"? The album was a natural progression from their first two LP's
and is probably the best indicator yet of their future potential.
Containing such killers and typical Chili titles as "Fight Like A Brave",
"Skinny Sweaty Man", "Funky Crime", "No Love Chump Sucker" and "Organic
Anti-Beat Box Band", "The Uplift Mofo Party Plan" is another fascinating
example of a band on the road towards international superstardom. Oh yeah,
did we forget, first time ever on 180 gram vinyl, so treat yourselves. |

Welcome to our fourth Red
Hot Chili Peppers release and their last album release for EMI before they
went to Warners and scored hugely with “Blood Sugar Sex Magik”. “Mothers
Milk” (No.52 US ’89) followed “Red Hot Chili Peppers” (SVLP156), “Freaky
Styley” (SVLP223) and “Uplift Mofo Party Plan” (SVLP242) and was obviously
EMI’s last shot attempt to get the band away. Which they almost did
following a barrage of singles like “Knock Me Down”, their cover of Stevie
Wonder’s “Higher Ground” (No.55 & No.54 UK ’89 – it was actually re-issued
twice in the UK) and “Taste The Pain” (No.29 UK ’90). Nonetheless, it
wasn’t to be, so the band split to Warners where all their subsequent
albums became smashes. By “Mothers Milk” the band had mutated somewhat
following the death of Hillel Slovak so the members were now Anthony
Kiedis, John Frusciante, Chad Smith and Flea and this was the line-up
which recorded “Blood Sex Sugar Magik” and finally found success after 12
years of hard slog. “Mothers Milk” remains a critical favourite to this
day. In fact, in many ways, the Chili’s were way ahead of their time – had
they launched now they’d have taken off immediately! Incidentally, a
beautiful cover with a naked lady holding all 4 Chili’s! |

We go to one of the most
influential rap groups of all time – Run DMC and their breakthrough album
“Raising Hell” (No.41 UK, No.3 US ’86). “Raising Hell” is famous for being
the first Rap album to ‘cross over’ to the mass market as a result of a
groundbreaking worldwide smash with their cover version of Aerosmith’s
“Walk This Way” (No.4 US, No.8 UK ’86). This inspired cover version
single-handedly transformed the fortunes of rap music because it suddenly
made it accessible to the mass white audience via MTV and mainstream
radio. Aside from “”Walk This Way”, the album contains several other
Hip-Hop classics in the form of “My Adidas”, “Peter Piper” (No.62 UK ’86),
“You Be Illin’” (No.42 UK, No.29 US ‘’87) and It’s Tricky” (No.16 UK,
No.57 US ’87). “Raising Hell” is another essential 180 gram Rap purchase
to go alongside our other classics like the three Public Enemy albums
(SVLP’s 213, 214 & 227), Arrested Development (SVLP217), Cypress Hill
(SVLP170) and Wu Tang Clan (SVLP215). Hey…..this was the sound of rap
fifteen years ago - long before Eminem was even old enough to rhyme. |

Run-D.M.C. is arguably the
greatest group in hip-hop history. They were the first rap group to
receive a gold plaque, the first to earn a platinum album, the first to
star on MTV, the first to become a household name … and, for two
generations of rap fans, they are the face and sound of '80s hardcore
hip-hop. Run (Joseph Simmons), D.M.C. (Darryl McDaniels), and Jam Master
Jay (Jason Mizell) make up the trio. In 1983, the three released their
first single, "It's Like That" on indie label Profile. The 12-inch
garnered enormous acclaim from local B-boys and became a national hit. The
B-side, "Sucker MC's" with its unusual (for the time) minimalist beat and
advanced rhyme style, is considered by many hip-hop lovers to be the first
hardcore rap song. The group's second album (which would eventually go
platinum), 1985's "King of Rock" featured hits like the title track, "You
Talk Too Much" and "Can You Rock It Like This" the latter including
ghostwritten lyrics by a then-16-year-old LL Cool J. In early 1986,
Run-D.M.C. starred in Krush Groove, a film co-starring the Fat Boys,
Kurtis Blow, LL Cool J, and then-unknowns the Beastie Boys. Unfortunately,
the film's release sparked violence in theaters across the country,
including a riot in Nassau County, N.Y. Despite the subsequent negative
publicity surrounding the group, Run-D.M.C. recorded and released Raising
Hell in 1986. It marked a watershed moment in hip-hop history and signaled
rap's final evolution from electro- and Hi-NRG-dance music to tough drum
machine beats and scratching effects. "Raising Hell" quickly became the
biggest-selling album in rap history, landing at No. 3 on the Billboard
charts and selling well more than 3 million copies on the strength of
singles like "My Adidas" and "Walk This Way" an audacious remake with the
song's originators, Aerosmith. "Walk This Way," for its part, not only
became the first top 10 single in hip-hop history (discounting Blondie's
1980 new wave ditty "Rapture"), but also single-handedly revived
Aerosmith's career. This is the "Ultimate" Run D.M.C Collection and
features all the tracks that have paved the way for today's Hip Hop
superstars. Not forgetting that Run D.M.C were the first Hip Hop
Superstars themselves... |
